RMOs (House Officers in UK-speak) like Jenny Butler have found that being a Christchurch hospital doctor provides the perfect work/life balance - in her case, for her and her young family. See how it works and what they do in their spare time in the video above, and then how she feels about work here.

We know that House Officers and RMOs are people first, and that once you have a family, life outside of work matters more than ever.

Don't think, just because of all the action adventure opportunities, that Christchurch isn't a great place to chill out, or spend some quality time. This is a city with many different facets. It's a great place for kids too.

Christchurch hospital doctors and those who become South Island hospital doctors are attracted here for all sorts of reasons, but one of the most common motivators is a desire for a different sort of life.

Maybe life in the fast lane has left little time for the other things that matter just as much as work – friends, family and fun. Or you’re tired of leaving for work in the dark, coming home in the dark, and glimpsing sunlight only for as long as it takes to scarf down a sandwich.

We know how important work/life balance is, and how precious your time is – which is why the CDHB works hard to make sure our South Island hospital doctor jobs come with the opportunity for a life, as well as a great career.

We want you to have the time to enjoy the incredible life on offer in Christchurch and Canterbury, as well as visit other places around the country that others can only dream about during a cold Northern winter. Whether it’s a ski weekend in the world-famous Queenstown resort, sipping some of the world's finest Sauvignon Blancs at their origin Nelson Marlborough, or a lazy afternoon picnic in the sun amongst the flowers and birdsong of our celebrated Botanic Gardens.

Even if it’s a simple leisurely cappuccino in a local café with time to read the paper, cover to cover, our RMOs and House Officers find that day to day life is gentler and easier here, with a pace all of its own.

The new container mall in the old CBD is an exciting place to visit
JUST A FIVE MINUTE STROLL FOR CHRISTCHURCH HOSPITAL DOCTORS:

The new 'pop up mall" in what was the old CBD is made up of old shipping containers. It's reinvigorated the heart of the city with some exciting shopping, cafes, buskers and a cool ultra-urbane atmosphere.

The Christchurch Botanical Gardens are simply stunning and praised throughout New Zealand. They're a great place to escape for a break - and they're right next to Christchurch and Christchurch Women's Hospital.

Christchurch is lucky to have sandy coastline that's great for surfing and swimming. Here's a surf lifesaving event at Sumner Beach.

"The setting is pretty unique. With the beach and the mountains so close by and the climate, I really can’t imagine a better place to live. I really enjoy working here."

Dr Charlie Cox
Senior House Officer, Orthopaedic Outpatients Department, Christchurch Hospital
